  1. An electroscope is an apparatus for detecting 
  2. electric charge. The simple gold-leaf 
  3. electroscope consists of a vertical 
  4. conducting (metal) rod ending in a pair of 
  5. rectangular pieces of gold foil, mounted 
  6. inside and insulated from an earthed metal 
  7. case. An electric charge applied to the end 
  8. of the metal rod makes the gold leaves 
  9. diverge, because they each receive a
  10. similar charge (positive or negative) and so
  11. repel each other.
